Domestic Violence

Physical Abuse isn’t just beating or threatening or a onetime slap, or even screaming and shouting. It is one continuous abuse of powers; a continuous consolidation of authority over the rights of the people. The abuser dominates, terrorizes, and hurts the victim through threats, coercion, and physical force. Physical abuse is what is usually witnessed as the final stage of power and control after months and years of aggression.

Domestic Violence Statistics: This refers to the number of people that are affected by the given disease or condition at any one time or over a given period of time, or the proportion of the population that is affected by a given disease or condition from time to time.
Globally at least one of every three women has been subjected to beating, forced sexual intercourse or other physical or sexual abuse by a close intimate at some point in her life. However, physical violence in intimate relationships is reported or estimated at 4 to 6 million people each year in the United States.

“One in every three adult female clients reports at least one physical assault by an intimate partner in adulthood. Over 4 million US women who sustain serious physical attack by intimate partners in a 12-month period.

“Approximately 2 million to 4 million US women are battered by an intimate partner each year. Twenty-five per cent of women or twelve million will be beaten by their partner in their lifetime. Up to one-third of women and twenty two percent of men seeking treatment in emergency departments report experiencing domestic violence.”

The precise incidence of domestic violence is difficult to determine for several reasons: it is not widely used, can be left out in surveys; there is no nationwide organization which compiles data from local police departments regarding the number of substantiated, and calls; and there is a great debate about what constitutes domestic violence. “One survey suggested that over 3% or just under 1.8 million women were severely attacked by male partners or live-in boyfriends in a year; other research shows that the proportion of women who experienced dating violence, including sexual assault, physical violence or stalking or verbal and emotional abuse, could be as high as 65 percent.”

However, the official statistics are available in the U. S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics report, published in May, 2000 which deals with part of the information concerning the domestic violence. Their own surveys include the National Crime Victimization Survey; data from the FBI also form the basis of their report especially as regards the homicide data. In the report the authors further explain that domestic violence includes violent crimes perpetrated by current or former spouses, boyfriend or girlfriends. Crimes that are violent are those that are lethal that is homicide and non-lethal which include rape, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, simple assault. From their data, we can say that in 1998, women were estimated to have suffered at least 900 000 violent offences committed by an intimate male and men were estimated to be victims of at least 160 000 violent crimes committed by an intimate female. When reading the report, one cannot find the signs of emotional abuse, harassment or stalking. So, more than 1 million violent crimes were committed against persons by their current or former spouses, boyfriends, or girlfriends.

Age trends: Domestic violence is most prominent among women aged 16 to 24.

Economic Trends: Poorer women experience significantly more domestic violence than higher income women.

Marital status: For both men and women, divorced or separated persons were subjected to the highest rates of intimate partner victimization, followed by never- married persons.

Reporting to police: The rates at which individuals report domestic violence to police vary along racial and gender lines. Hispanic and black women report domestic violence at the highest rate (approximately 65% to 67% of abuse is reported). For white females, only about 50% of the abuse is reported.

The domestic violence should be controlled because the women suffers more & it affects the generation. A serious notice should be taken against the domestic violence so the rate would be decreased for sure.
